Mary Kom: Bags 6th Gold in World Boxing Championship

Mary Kom has made history once again, her victory is like her punch on the face of all those stereotypes who think that daughters are of no good and can’t do any better than men, and at the same time inspiration to those who love their dreams and want to achieve them.

Mary became the world’s most successful female boxer when she won the sixth gold medal by defeating Ukraine’s Hannah Okhotaonly with a 5-0 margin in the 48kg light flyweight final of the Women’s World Boxing Championships at KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

Earlier on this day fans chanted “Mary Kom, Mary Kom” at the stadium during the match, but now not just India but the whole world is chanting her name.

After the match, being emotional the Best Boxer, wiping her tears said “Much thanks to you for your love and support. I don’t have anything to give with the exception of a gold award to the nation. Today, I was a little bit emotional because, for the last few years, I was not able to fight in 48 kg category. I realize it will be somewhat difficult for me to win a gold in Tokyo as I have to battle in 51kg. I am still imagining about winning the gold in 2020 Olympics,”.

She also added saying, “I dedicate this gold to the nation and my countrymen.”

Mary Kom now holds a record of seven medals in total becoming the most successful boxer in a tournaments history.
After this win along with six gold medals and a silver, Mary stands as the greatest female boxer in the 17-year history of the event and equals to the world championship male boxer Cuban Felix Savon’s record.

Mary Kom the Manipuri boxer, who is a mother of three had won gold in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 and a silver in 2001 on her debut.

In the other match of the day, 21-year-old Sonia Chahal, who was aiming for her first gold at the Championships ended with a silver medal after losing to Germany’s Wahner Ornella Gabriele in the Women’s 57 kg category final.

India completed the championship with one gold, one silver, and two bronze awards from Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Simranjit Kaur (64kg).
